Training Programme for Experts on Motor System Optimization

On the morning of 1 December 2025, in Ha Noi, the Agency for Innovation, Green Transition, and Industry Promotion (IGIP) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) organised a training programme for experts on motor system optimization.

The programme is part of the project “Accelerating energy efficiency in large industries through energy management systems, system optimisation and the promotion and adoption of energy efficiency in small and medium-sized enterprises” (IEEP Project), funded by the European Union, with MOIT as the executing agency and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) as the implementing partner.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan, IEEP National Project Manager

Delivering the opening remarks, Ms. Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Lan—IEEP National Project Manager—stated, “In the current international context, where environmental protection and sustainable development are increasingly emphasised, improving energy efficiency has become an essential requirement for all Vietnamese enterprises. The training courses implemented under the IEEP Project consistently focus on equipping participants with knowledge, skills, and practical approaches to applying energy-saving solutions to industrial energy systems, thereby enabling enterprises to meet international integration requirements. Following the first round of training held in September and October 2025, the Project continues with the second round on motor system optimization, aiming to provide expert-level trainees with in-depth knowledge, skills, and essential tools to deliver technical support to enterprises and train corporate staff in developing and implementing motor system optimization projects.”

The programme attracted a large number of participants, including lecturers from technical universities, staff from provincial industry promotion and energy efficiency centres, and specialists from energy consulting firms in Ha Noi, Bac Ninh, Da Nang, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Thap, and Can Tho.

In addition to two days of classroom-based theoretical learning, the training also includes two days of practical fieldwork at a manufacturing facility, where participants will be introduced to and practise using current measurement devices, tachometers, power quality loggers, thermal cameras, and other tools, as well as learn key parameters of a typical motor system. Trainees will also be equipped with the skills to conduct measurements and collect essential information on motor systems in factories, forming the basis for optimization assessments. Upon completion, participants are expected to (i) assess motor systems using a systems-based approach; (ii) identify opportunities to optimize motor systems; (iii) recognise cases of inefficiency or improper operation and evaluate alternative solutions; and (iv) complete an optimization assessment report for the motor system at the facility.

Mr. Siraj Williams, Senior International Expert of UNIDO, delivering training

The training content is developed based on UNIDO’s Training Development Framework and covers topics such as an overview of motor systems; principles of operation and efficiency of electric motors; components of drive systems; motor performance analysis; introduction to motor system assessment tools; and identification of optimization solutions. The trainer is Mr. Siraj Williams, a Senior International Expert of UNIDO from South Africa.

A similar workshop expected on 18 December 2025 in Phu Tho

The IEEP Project regularly implements support activities related to energy efficiency for industrial enterprises across various provinces nationwide, focusing on priority sectors such as rubber processing, chemicals and fertilizers, metallurgy and steel, plastics, textiles and garments, food processing, seafood processing, and energy consulting services.

On 18 December 2025, the Project is expected to organise a “Workshop on Raising Awareness of Energy Management System Application and System Optimization” in Phu Tho, contributing to the Project’s commitment to promoting the implementation of measures that improve energy efficiency in industrial enterprises.
