On March 26-27, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), organised a training course on “Developing and Operating an Energy Management System in Compliance with ISO 50001 Standards”.
This training course is part of Component 2 of the project ‘Accelerating Energy Efficiency in Large Industries through Energy Management Systems, System Optimisation, and the Promotion and Adoption of Energy Efficiency in SMEs’ (IEEP project), implemented by UNIDO with the assistance of the European Union.
In her opening remarks, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lam Giang, Director General of the Innovation, Green Transition, and Industrial Promotion Agency (MOIT), emphasised the critical role of implementing an energy management system (EnMS) aligned with ISO 50001 standards. She highlighted that such systems not only help businesses reduce energy costs and enhance competitiveness but also contribute to national energy security and the country’s sustainable development goals.
MOIT has been implementing the National Energy Efficiency Program (VNEEP) to encourage businesses and communities to adopt energy-saving measures and energy management practices on a broader scale. The ministry expects enterprises to integrate EnMSs and pursue energy-saving solutions, fostering sustainable development while aligning with the global transition towards energy efficiency.
As Viet Nam continues to revise the Law on Energy Efficiency to better support sustainable development and the green economic transition, MOIT and UNIDO remain committed to assisting businesses in adopting energy-saving solutions. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the sustainable growth of Viet Nam’s industrial sector.
The two-day training gathered nearly 60 participants, including managers and technical staff from 30 industrial enterprises representing key sectors such as pulp and paper, food processing, rubber processing, beverages, textiles, chemicals and fertilizers, metallurgy and steel, plastics, and cement. The program provided participants with essential knowledge, skills, and methodologies to develop and implement an EnMS in accordance with ISO 50001 standards.
Delivered by a team of experienced experts, the training curriculum was based on UNIDO’s Training Framework for EnMS in Industry and was tailored by national and international specialists to reflect Viet Nam’s current context.
Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the key components of an EnMS and the economic and environmental benefits of energy management and ISO 50001. They were also equipped to advocate resource allocation within their companies for EnMS implementation, integrating it into business development plans. Additionally, they learned how to initiate, implement, and continuously improve their enterprise’s EnMS.
Attendees highly valued the training’s content and methodology, expressing confidence that the acquired knowledge would enable them to develop and implement EnMS solutions tailored to their respective enterprises.
