On August 8 2022, as part of the EU – Viet Nam Sustainable Energy Transition Programme (SETP), EU facilitated an SOs exchange on the role of SOs and their view/assessment on the energy sector development in Viet Nam. The roundtable session received the participation and fruitful discussion of representatives of both leading local and international SOs in Vietnam’s energy sector.
Participated in the roundtable discussion were representatives of Oxfam in Vietnam, World Wide Fund for Nature in Vietnam (WWF), Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), Viet Nam Initiative for Energy Transition (VIET SE), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), GreenID, Centre for Creativity and Sustainability (CCS), SNV, and EU – Viet Nam Sustainable Energy Transition Facility (EVSET Facility) team under the facilitation of EU Delegation Acting Head of Cooperation, Mr Jesús LAVIÑA, and Programme Manager – Sustainable Energy.
All the participating organisations highly treasured the strong commitment of Vietnam in Net-Zero in 2050 with prioritizing in renewable energy development and energy efficiency since Vietnam has many potentials in these aspects. However, they highlighted challenges of the country in the consistency of legal framework and roadmap for sustainable energy development at both national and sub-national levels. Another challenge raised were how to harmonize policies in energy development with other policies, i.e., on agriculture, climate change, land use. Coordination and collaboration between sectors, energy stakeholders and key actors at national and provincial levels was also emphasised to implement the roadmap for Vietnam.
In response to the challenges, the EU highly appreciates the roles of SOs in the energy transition and expressed thanks for the open discussion, which would be suggestions for the EU to provide substantial support to the SOs in the framework of its 2021 – 2027 MIP. Support for a climate-responsive digital circular economy, including low-carbon development/Green Deal, is one of the focal sectors of the 2021 – 2027 MIP. In the context of political will and commitment of the Government of Viet Nam toward Net Zero Emission by 2050 (NZE), EU believes that the SETP will be a potential resource for SOs to join the meaningful works with EU in delivering the sustainable energy transition in Vietnam.
