Recently, in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of MOIT Nguyen Hoang Long held a working session with Mr. Sujiro Seam, the EU Ambassador to ASEAN. Representing the EU at the meeting were Mr. Julien Guerrier, Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Vietnam, along with other delegation officials. On the Vietnamese side, attendees included leaders from the European – American Market Department, the Department of Energy Efficiency & Sustainable Development, the Electricity & Renewable Energy Authority, and the Electricity Regulatory Authority.
Deputy Minister Long highlighted the significant progress in EU-ASEAN and EU-Vietnam relations across various sectors, particularly in economy and trade, where extensive, substantive, and effective cooperation initiatives have been implemented. The EU Ambassador also commended Vietnam’s role within ASEAN, recognizing it as a highly promising market for EU businesses, particularly in energy and green transition – key areas of EU expertise and interest. The EU delegation expressed strong interest in exploring investment opportunities in Vietnam as a gateway to the broader regional market while reaffirming their commitment to deploying support projects, transferring technology, and advancing initiatives under the European Green and Sustainable Connectivity framework.
During the meeting, both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on cooperation in green transition, with a particular focus on energy transition. Along with Indonesia, Vietnam is one of only two ASEAN member states participating in a Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with the EU. The EU’s support for Vietnam’s energy transition has materialized through key projects under the “Global Gateway” initiative, notably the EU-funded Bac Ai pumped-storage hydropower project, which will contribute an additional 1,200 MW to Vietnam’s renewable energy capacity. Other projects include wind and solar power initiatives.
Both parties also agreed on the importance of strengthening trade and energy cooperation, effectively implementing JETP, and promoting green and clean energy projects. These efforts aim to foster sustainable energy development in alignment with global standards.
