Enhancing energy auditors’ capacity in heat integration

On 30 September 2026, the Ministry of Industry and Trade opened a three-day training course on energy auditing using heat integration techniques in Hanoi. The course gathered energy auditors who are working at reputable energy auditing organisations and industrial promotion centers across Hanoi and Hai Phong.

The training course is part of the “Accelerating energy efficiency in large industries through energy management systems, system optimisation and the promotion and adoption of energy efficiency in small and medium-sized enterprises” project (IEEP). The IEEP project is funded by the European Union, managed by Viet Nam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

In his opening remarks, Mr. Hoang Viet Dung, a member of the Project Management Unit under the MOIT, said that this is an advanced training course, specifically designed for energy auditors who MOIT has already trained and certified. ‘Industrial enterprises still have significant potential to save thermal energy,’ Mr. Dung noted. ‘This course, therefore, equips auditors with advanced analysis tools and approaches to better heat recovery systems. This provides an important foundation for energy auditors to support industrial enterprises effectively, particularly in food and beverage processing sectors, in recycling waste heat, improving energy performance and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.’

Two senior international experts, Mr. Richard Morrison and Mr. Colin Donohue, served as the trainers for the course. With more than 20 years of experience in energy management and auditing, energy-efficient design, decarbonisation strategies, and sustainability planning for businesses and organisations, the two experts provided participants with both specialised knowledge and valuable practical insights. This helped participants strengthen their ability to apply these theories and techniques directly in their work.

This training is the first one of its kinds under the IEEP Project. A similar training course will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from 7 – 9 October 2026.

The participants are energy auditors who MOIT has already trained and certified.

Currently, regularly training and certifying energy auditors in Viet Nam is among priorities for MOIT. This work aims to ensure that energy audits follow current regulations and that energy-saving solutions and potential are properly identified and implemented. Each energy auditor training course organised by MOIT lasts 11 days and includes both theoretical and practical sessions.

Beyond training, MOIT is also providing policy recommendations, implementing communication and awareness-raising activities, and studying financial support mechanisms for energy-efficient initiatives. Notably, MOIT plans to submit a proposal to the Prime Minister in October 2026 for approval to establish the Fund for Promoting Energy Conservation and Efficiency. Once approved, the fund will give enterprises easier access to financial and technical support from identifying energy-saving potential to investing in and carrying out in-depth energy efficiency measures and initiatives.
