Ha Noi, March 16th, 2024 – The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) organized a public event to launch the Nationwide electricity saving campaign and a Race for Energy Efficiency (R4EE). The event attracted the participation of the MOIT’s Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan, Deputy head of the Central Commission of Foreign Relations Truong Quang Hoai Nam, the EU Delegation to Viet Nam’s Head of Cooperation Kristina Buende, representatives of domestic and foreign organizations and businesses, and nearly 1,500 runners, respectively.

Delivering a remark at the event, Ms. Kristina Buende reasserted the EU’s support to Viet Nam’s Netzero targets by 2050. EU’s key support to Viet Nam is helping the country to achieve that target through the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). The energy sector currently accounts for around 60% of greenhouse gas emissions, therefore energy efficiency and energy saving are core values of the EU’s support.
Mr. Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan emphasised that the R4EE, in response to the 2024 Earth Hour Campaign, will contribute another voice and spread the vibrant message “Save Electricity – Make It a Habit” to the community. He expressed his expectations that communities and businesses nationwide will proactively join hands to protect the environment and save energy to achieve the netzero emissions by 2050 according to Viet Nam’s commitment at COP26..
The R4EE race aims to build awareness of exercise for health toward an active lifestyle and encourage the participation of state agencies, social organizations, businesses, communities, and people to regularly practice electricity saving throughout 365 days of the year.

After the launching ceremony, nearly 1,500 professional and amateur runners competed at a distance of 5km. Nguyen Duy Lam, one of the elite runners in Viet Nam, claimed the victory in the male category, Nguyen Van Tri and Dang Duc Truong crossed the finish line at the second and third place respectively. In the female category, Tran Thu Trang performed excellently to become the winner, Nguyen Thi Hai Yen was the runner-up, and third place belonged to Pham Thi Hao.
In addition, the 2024 R4EE is also organised online via the Uprace platform. Runners all over the world can join the challenge from March 16th to March 31st. The online 2024 R4EE is funded by the European Union through the EU – Viet Nam Sustainable Energy Transition Facility under the framework of the EU – Viet Nam Sustainable Energy Transition Programme.
