Enterprises accelerate mastery of energy management systems in the context of the global energy crisis

On April 15, 2026, in Ho Chi Minh City, the IEEP Project officially opened the training course “Development and Operation of Energy Management Systems (EnMS) in accordance with ISO 50001 standards,” attracting 71 participants who are managers and technical staff from major industrial enterprises across the country.

The course not only provides technical knowledge but also contributes to enhancing energy management capacity—an element that is becoming both a “bottleneck” and a “lever” for enterprise competitiveness in the green transition phase.

Mr. Hoang Viet Dung – Deputy Head of the Energy Efficiency and Green Transition Division, Agency for Innovation, Green Transition and Industrial Promotion, Ministry of Industry and Trade, delivered the opening remarks for the training course.

In his opening speech, Mr. Hoang Viet Dung – Deputy Head of the Energy Efficiency and Green Transition Division, Agency for Innovation, Green Transition and Industrial Promotion, Ministry of Industry and Trade – emphasized the urgency of energy management in the context of global energy security facing unprecedented challenges, as geopolitical conflicts disrupt energy supply sources. From a policy perspective, he also affirmed that the development and operation of energy management systems are no longer optional but have become legal and strategic requirements for industrial enterprises, especially following the promulgation and enforcement of the Law and its guiding documents, such as: Law No. 77/2025/QH15 dated June 18, 2025 of the National Assembly amending the Law on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy; Decree No. 30/2026/ND-CP dated January 21, 2026 of the Government detailing a number of articles and measures for implementation of the Law; and Circulars regulating energy consumption norms in seven manufacturing industries.

Overview of the training course “Development and Operation of Energy Management Systems (EnMS) according to ISO 50001” in Ho Chi Minh City, gathering more than 70 participants from industrial enterprises nationwide.

The training course is implemented under the project “Promoting energy efficiency in large industries through energy management systems, system optimization, and energy efficiency practices in small and medium-sized enterprises in Vietnam” (IEEP Project), which is part of the Sustainable Energy Transition Programme funded by the European Union. The Ministry of Industry and Trade serves as the governing body, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the implementing agency. This is one of the key activities aimed at enabling Vietnamese enterprises to access advanced energy management tools while meeting increasingly stringent requirements of the global market.

Participants actively engaged in discussions, exchanges, and sharing of practical experiences in the process of developing and operating energy management systems within their enterprises.

Over the two-day course, participants are guided by two domestic experts: Dr. Ta Dang Khoa (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology) and MSc. Nguyen Manh Tuan (Ho Chi Minh City Startup and Innovation Center), with training content systematically designed by UNIDO, closely aligned with ISO 50001 standards and tailored to the Vietnamese context.

The first day of training focuses on the fundamentals of energy management systems, including core concepts, establishing leadership commitment, developing energy policies, and setting up data collection systems. On the second day, participants will delve into system implementation and operation, utilizing supporting tools, resource planning, financial appraisal, and developing specific implementation proposals for their enterprises.

Participants of the training course are managers and technical staff from key industrial sectors such as food processing, seafood, textiles and garments, beverages, paper, chemicals and fertilizers, metals and steel, and cement. The participation of major enterprises such as Acecook Vietnam, Nha Be Garment Corporation, Southern Basic Chemicals, Viet Nhat Fertilizer, Saigon Aquatic Products, Nam Kim Steel, Ha Tien Cement, and Orion Vina demonstrates the increasingly clear interest of the manufacturing sector in energy optimization and emissions reduction.

Beyond knowledge transfer, the training course also creates a platform for practical exchange among enterprises, thereby forming a network of energy efficiency practitioners—core agents capable of implementing energy management systems within their organizations and disseminating best practices across the business community nationwide.

In a context where energy is increasingly tied to competitiveness and adaptability, the adoption of ISO 50001 not only helps enterprises reduce costs but also establishes a foundation for transparent governance and sustainable integration. Moreover, it contributes to achieving the national target of 8–10% energy savings by 2030 as set out in the National Program on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy for the 2019–2030 period.

The collective of trainers and participants of the course share a common goal of promoting efficient and sustainable energy use.

The training course in Ho Chi Minh City on April 15–16, 2026 represents a concrete step in that journey—where enterprises not only learn how to save energy but also how to take control of their own future in an increasingly volatile world.
