Sweden Supports Viet Nam’s Sustainable and Just Energy Transition

Sweden will assist Viet Nam in transitioning toward a low-carbon economy through investment, technology transfer, and policy dialogue, with a particular focus on renewable energy, grid modernization, and clean technologies.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), on 4 November in Ha Noi, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long received and held talks with Ms. Sara Modig, State Secretary to the Minister for Climate and Enterprise of the Kingdom of Sweden, during her working visit to Viet Nam.

The visit of Deputy Minister Sara Modig aims to further strengthen the substantive partnership between Viet Nam and Sweden and to realize the cooperation aspirations expressed in the Memorandum of Understanding on Economic, Trade, and Green Development Cooperation signed between the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The MoU was handed over by Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long to Mr. Håkan Jevrell, State Secretary to the Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, during the official visit to Sweden by Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan in December 2024.

During the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long shared the Government of Viet Nam’s sustainable development goals in the fields of industry, energy, and green transition.

In recent years, Viet Nam has made remarkable progress in its development journey, transforming into a dynamic economy expected to achieve GDP growth of 8% in 2025 and aiming for double-digit growth in the following years. Viet Nam has increasingly affirmed its active role within ASEAN, as well as its deeper engagement in the United Nations’ activities and major trade agreements, demonstrating its growing influence and commitment to global cooperation. Swedish and European partners are always welcome to participate in offshore wind development projects and in the advancement of smart grid systems.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Long proposed that both sides explore the possibility of establishing a cooperation framework on energy, focusing on areas such as the development of green and clean energy sources, collaboration in the development of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), and cooperation in the exploration and utilization of rare earth resources.

Deputy Minister Sara Modig affirmed that Sweden stands ready to accompany Viet Nam in achieving its sustainability goals. As one of the leading countries in Europe and the world in green energy, Sweden is well-positioned to support Viet Nam’s transition to a low-carbon economy through investment, technology transfer, and policy dialogue — especially in renewable energy, grid modernization, and clean technology.

Ms. Modig also introduced several Swedish enterprises active in the energy sector, including Hitachi Energy Vietnam, Comsys, and Unipower. She expressed hope that both sides would work together to explore viable cooperation mechanisms between Vietnamese agencies and reputable, experienced Swedish organizations to support Viet Nam’s sustainable and just energy transition.

On this occasion, Deputy Minister Sara Modig introduced and invited MOIT leaders to attend the event “Energy and the Digital World: Modernizing Viet Nam’s Power Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future,” scheduled for early December 2025. The event, co-organized by the Embassy of Sweden and Business Sweden in cooperation with relevant Vietnamese agencies, aims to promote technical exchange and policy dialogue, fostering enhanced cooperation between Viet Nam and Sweden in modernizing Viet Nam’s power infrastructure.
